The Barrelmaker Brimful of Love
Love is short; love is long
Osen's parents sent her to serve as a lady's maid because they were short in their village tax. Most of the time, in other countries not just in Japan, when their parents are having a hard time raising their children or keeping up with other responsibility such as paying tax. They will send their child to other people that are better off than they are, which sometimes gives the kid a better opportunity in life to become anything he or she wants to be in life.
Osen was one of the few that had a good opportunity, because the lady of the house was pleased with her. She trusted Osen. (591) "Later she was allowed free access to the inner store room where all the fine things were kept." Which if the lady of the house does not like her she might not be able to see that inner store room until they send her back to her parent's house. Osen was a very intelligent girl that respected herself in such ways that she didn't flirt with men around her which gave her more respect to some people around her. Even the old nanny tried everything she can to get Osen and Cooper to get together. They drank the cup of betrothal, (599) pledging themselves to each other forever.
Cooper and Osen went on their separate ways. Osen eventually started thinking about cooper and having sleepless night about him. Her color and body appearance shows that something is not right. Even the food in the house doesn't taste the same anymore. Until someone said: "It is the implacable spirit of the man who is madly in love with Osen- the Cooper." This comment wakes Osen's master and her mistress to realise what was wrong with Osen, their housemaid. They decided to bring Osen and Cooper together in wedlock. They went and consulted the old nanny. After that they sent for cooper and concluded a marriage contract with him.
Cooper and Osen start their family and have two children. Osen still love her husband until the day of Chozaemon's father's fifty years death anniversary. That she accused by Chozaemon's wife of sleeping with her husband. Osen was very angry about Chozaemon's wife's accusation, it pushed her to sleep with Chozaemon which will cause her, her life, eventually because it is an abomination for a married woman to sleep with another man, not just a man, a married man. Her husband even saw Chozaemon. In that case, Ozen realized that there is no hope for her to fight to stay alive then she killed herself. It is just a sad situation for Osen to have worked so hard in her young life to stay strong and respected. Then came to her adult life and loose all the respect and died in shame.
