Hedda Gabbler a play published in
1890 by Henrik Ibsen. This play features a woman named Hedda gabbler the
daughter of General gabbler; who came back from her honey moon with, her
husband, George Tesman. He is an inspiring young academic man, who is also reliable.
Although he has a lot of qualities he is not very good at making decisions. Hedda
gabbler is a neurotic protagonist who loves power and control of her life.
During the time this play was written it may have seemed like her character was
extremely out of the ordinary but I think she was looking for herself.

Though she and Tesman are married, she
is discontent and proceeds to develop an affair with one loevberg. Hedda comes
from a nobility background but marries a man in the bourgeoisie. She finds it
difficult to adjust to this type of like where there is worry about
finances. She is used to getting what
she wants when she wants and refuses to have it any other way.

I think being a woman in her time period
was difficult because she was property to her father. Her inner scramble for
power is merely a cry to control her own life. It makes sense that Ibsen named
the played after her since she still has her maiden name because she is not her
husband’s wife but more so her father’s daughter. Her affairs in my opinion
were her way of searching for true love. I drew the conclusion to the
conclusion that she really did fall in love with her man friend, because after
he died in the brothel she fell into a depression and decided to take her own
life.

I think Hedda had an inner struggle
that any woman or person could identify with to a certain level especially when
we were young. To escape her father’s clutch she married Tesman. She also got
married to steer clear of being an old maid. It is sad story of a woman
desperate to find happiness.
